Is it normal to not really be promiscuous at all but gay?

I'm currently single and planning on dating soon but to be fair I heard of a stereotype of promiscuity in the gay dating arena and am wondering if there are others who feel that it's best to take things slowly and probably not go to first base on the first date unless you both feel a connection.
