The story is about a monomaniac guy who falls in love with his cousin Berenice. Berenice later comes down with an illness which leaves her disfigured and sometimes, she appears to be dead (not moving, not breathing, etc). This is the reason she is buried alive. Egaeus becomes obsessed with her teeth which are the only things left on her not disfigured. He is later informed that she had died and been buried. One night, Egaeus is told that Berenice's grave was dug up and she was found alive. Egaeus is covered in mud and blood. He picks up a box in his room (he had been afraid of it for some reason) and accidentally drops it and out falls Berenice's teeth.
